We live in a complex digitally dependent world and at its core is a very simple system. Binary, a base 2 number system is made up of only two numbers: 0 and 1. This number system is the basis for all computer code, used to write the instructions that computer processors use. This binary framework lies behind all of our mass media communication systems and provides the foundation for our globalized world, including the digital text you are reading now. Ideas are increasingly presented to us in a binary format, however in a living system as complex as our globally connected world, problems and solutions rarely fall neatly into an either/or format.

Images have power to convey ideas across languages and cultures. Images can stand alone without relying on a literal translation. Today our visual fields are filled with imagery (television to Instagram) and a literate mind unconsciously reads text without considering it. You don’t have to tell yourself to read a stop sign – you just do. From road signs and graffiti, to pop-up ads and text messages, we are constantly and instantaneously ingesting language and its message. How does the involuntary practice of reading, translating, influence the artistic practice?

Parsing Sign and Image sought submissions that consider the influence of letters, text, signs and language.

"Immersed In Abstraction"

THE EXHIBITION: Abstract works can range from an abstracted interpretation of a person, place or thing or nonobjective works (works which do not depict a recognizable subject, instead the artist relies upon only the elements of art and design or process to create meaning). Historically, abstract artists strive to allow the viewer to interpret each artwork's meaning in their own way.

"Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential." –Wassily Kandinsky.

Art transcends. It ignites our senses, arousing our inner-most thoughts and feelings.  It nourishes humanity and connects us to the world in which we live.
The works speak to “The Power of Art” from artists in the New England Region.
